When it comes to sport, there really is something for everyone… You just need to try a few to find what you enjoy most, but taking part in group sports has a huge influence on so many aspects of our lives, including both physical and mental health – from feeling fitter and healthier to an improved mindset, there are so many reasons to get active playing sports, including:

Better sleep

Exercise is great for improving sleep quality, so it’s no surprise that regularly playing sports can improve your sleep pattern over time. Using sport to burn off any excess energy helps us feel happier and more relaxed, which can help prevent those dreaded restless nights. If you want to double the benefits, combine playing sports outdoors, the fresh air will also improve these results even more – resulting in a great night’s sleep!

Improved lung function

Regular exercise is the best way to strengthen your lungs, and taking part in sports activities is an enjoyable way to achieve this. When you’re physically active, your lungs have to work much harder to provide the additional oxygen your body requires, helping to make them stronger over time, improving their function and efficiency. You could even try learning some deep breathing exercises to train your body to breathe deeper and more efficiently when exercising.

A strong heart

Much like your lungs, your heart also has to work much harder when you’re exercising and as one of the most important organs in our bodies, it goes without saying that keeping your heart healthy is one of the most important reasons to stay active. A healthy heart will not only reduce your risk of certain diseases, but also improve your blood pressure, overall health and fitness levels.

New connections

Playing sports with others is great for motivation, support and encouragement, making it ideal for getting together with friends or making new ones. Often the teamwork involved requires trust and communication, allowing you to work to your strengths as well as learn new skills from others participating. Many sports teams also enjoy social events together, which is the perfect opportunity to build new friendships.

Improved mental health

As well as improving our physical health, it’s been proven numerous times that keeping active is also hugely beneficial to our mental health. When we physically exert ourselves, our bodies release neurotransmitters including endorphins and serotonin, which help to lift our mood and as a result, we feel more positive – helping to relieve tension and feelings of stress, depression and anxiety.

Increased confidence

With improved mental and physical health, many of those who take part in group sports report an increase in confidence too. Whether playing for fun with friends or competing, your strength, ability and achievements combined with improved mental health will work wonders to boost confidence and self-esteem.
